WWE says he's been granted a one-off, and will be back for at Summer Slam.
I get it. Brock Lesnar is someone WWE wants to keep happy, and if he says "I'm gonna do this," I can see why they'd allow it. At the same time, it's a bit of a risk. Best case for WWE, he goes and wins. Worst case, he not only loses but gets injured and can't compete at Summer Slam.
Would've been nice if WWE could have worked out some sort of deal. We'll let Brock fight one time if you let Ronda Rousey wrestle one time.
Yeah I don't see the benefit for WWE. I see what you are saying about Rousey but she just had knee surgery so that is a no go. McGregor would be cool BUT he has a fight the night before SummerSlam so not sure if they could pull that off either. I guess it came down to financial compensation. Lesnar will put extra eyes on UFC 200 for sure I just don't know who he can face that will be worthy of a Co-Main event slot. I'd bet money that Lesnar/Mir III was the intention prior to Mir's suspension. Fedor would be cool but he has a fight soon so it'd be 100% dependent on him walking out injury free. Other than that I believe only Mark Hunt and Junior Dos Santos in terms of top 10 guys don't have fights coming up.
Barnett already has a fight booked. He is headlining a card in Germany against Andrei Arlovski. UFC has changed fights before but they tend to leave main events alone so I doubt it. Also feel like the Lesnar deal has been brewing for awhile so if Barnett was an option they wanted, they wouldn't have booked him. I'm starting to feel like it's going to be somebody not on the roster at this point, just book it as an "attraction" more than anything. We should know tomorrow though, that's when the opponent will be officially announced.
I hadn't touched on it yet but there was a bit of a downside to this news as well. Ariel Helwani broke the news as well as news of the Diaz/McGregor rematch being signed both before the UFC aired its video packages. Prior to the main event Helwani and two of his colleagues were escorted out of the building, had their press credentials taken, and told they were banned for life. Dana White and Helwani have butted heads before over Helwani breaking news but apparently Lesnar himself was upset about the news leaking. Personally I think it is a bit of an overreaction and the UFC should be more concerned with who Helwani's sources were rather than Helwani himself. Ultimately all Helwani did was once again report news that was indeed accurate, something he has had quite the knack for. This has been brewing for awhile though and rumors suggest the UFC may have had something to do with Helwani leaving Fox a couple of months ago.
Whole thing seems kind of childish and silly but when you look back at their fallout with Burt Watson as well as Jacob "Stitch" Duran, it is pretty much par for the course.
