Well in one of the stranger occurrences, CB Dollaway is out of his fight tonight due to an elevator accident. Apparently a group of UFC fighters were in an elevator at the hotel when the cable snapped and the elevator fell to the basement injuring Dollaway's back. None of the other fighters were hurt apparently.
It is what it is. I can't laugh, only because it takes a pretty big set of balls to even attempt to do what he did. HOWEVER, the moment they announced his opponent as being a high level grappler I knew he was in for it. While I will tip my hat to the guy for the effort let's not pull any punches; Punk didn't look good at all. I know he says he'll continue but I simply see no way that this isn't a one and done. Time was never on his side and he got mauled. It's weird that for Roufus Sports having such a high caliber wrestling coach that their guys out of that gym are typically terrible at takedown defense.
Sucks for Mickey though because we still have zero indication of his true skillset.
Good night of fights, here's some brief thoughts on the rest of the PPV card.
Andrade/Calderwood - Surprised by this one. Andrade really is showing that the 115 lbs. division is a much better fit for her. I know she wants a title shot but I still think she needs another win or two to get there.
Faber/Rivera - Faber is a legend and will possibly go down as one of the best guys to make it to the UFC and never win gold there. After his last few fights though I just don't think he can compete at the highest level anymore. Don't get me wrong Rivera is a great prospect but Faber looked very flat footed and lost most of the fight.
Werdum/Browne - Let's call it what it is; ever since Travis Browne has started dating Ronda Rousey and switched to her coaches he's gone downhill fast. Looks nowhere near the caliber fighter he once was and Werdum picked him apart mostly. Also weird spot where the ref screwed up and allowed Browne a timeout since he dislocated his finger. Fight should have been ruled a TKO loss since you can't just stop fighting without there being a foul. Things got a little heated between Werdum and his corner and Browne's corner at the end and both corners had to be removed from the cage post fight.
Miocic/Overeem - I knew this one wasn't going the distance. Overeem's chin is shot but when he fights technical and shows good defense he is still extremely dangerous. Both men rocked each other and looked to be on the verge of winning at separate moments. Ultimately Miocic getting on top of Overeem was a huge turning point though. Didn't care for Overeem trying to say Miocic tapped when it obviously did not happen. Was funny to see Rogan basically call him on it though and make him watch the replay in slow motion twice while Overeem just stood there like a statue.
Feel bad for the people who ordered just to support Punk (never buy fights just to watch a single bout) but hopefully they enjoyed what was a pretty fun card. Great crowd tonight too, I love when the UFC goes to markets it doesn't hit as often because the crowds are always good.
EDIT: Also got to acknowledge that leaping sidekick that Werdum started the fight with. One of the crazier things I've seen to start a fight.
