Before I get into the nitty gritty, let me say why doing this is a good idea:
By doing this I make so much glimmer that to keep myself from being maxed I have to buy ~5 heavy synthesis after I do 2-3 Vanguard Heroic Strikes.
By doing this I have never needed to earn XP for any of the exotics, or legendaries I want to try out. I max them out immediately using this Motes of Light technique.
This technique nets me 5 Legendary Marks per legendary item dismantled instead of 3.
So those are the benefits that I get from doing the motes of life technique.
How is it done?
Step 1: Save all of the blues you acquire in various strikes, patrols, etc. They are they keys to the Motes of Light castle. Step 2: When you have ~8 blues of each kind of weapon, and around 5 blues of each kind of armor, and ~20 motes of light, get ready to rumble. Step 3: Equip your blues in every slot, except the slot with a piece of gear you want to level up. It's possible to level up multiple armor pieces, but you won't get as many Motes of Light back from blues in the process. I've leveled 2-3 legendary peices of gear in tandem before, and you usually end up losing around 10 motes of light if you do. Step 4: Use motes to level your gear, dismantling the blues when they get enough experience to return 2 motes of light.
Below is an approximation (or known number) of motes required to level up gear to the point of getting 2 motes of light back.
Primary/Secondary Weapons: ~10-12 motes Heavy Weapons: Exactly 5 motes Head/Hands/Chest/Feet: 16 motes Cloak: ~12 motes Artifact/Ghost: ~10 motes (but blues only return 1 mote)
So lets say, for the sake of demonstrating the concept that I want to level up a new cloak I got from Kings Fall. Lets also say its takes 32 motes of light to do this (Idk if this is the real value but it's irrelevant in describing how many motes I'll get back).
If I use the Mote of Light Technique, consuming 32 motes of light to level this cloak while leveling/dismantling/replacing the other slots with blues, I will get these returns for each slot of gear:
Primary Weapon: +6 motes of light (3 weapons at 10 motes per weapon, returning 6) Secondary Weapon: +6 motes of light (3 weapons at 10 motes per weapon, returning 6) Heavy Weapon: +12 motes of light (6 weapons at 5 motes per weapon, returning 12) Head/Hands/Chest/Feet: +16 motes of light (I'm combining these slots because they all require 16. So you'll consume 2 blues of those four slots and net back 2 motes per blue. 242=16) Ghost/Artifact: +3-6 motes (i never acquire enough ghosts to really use them in this technique, so lets say 3)
Summing these returns, we get 6 + 6 + 12 + 16 + 3 = 41 motes of light back from the blues equipped in all slots but cloak, while charging the cloak we want to level up with 32 motes of light. This means that using this technique has actually gained us 9 motes of light. These are approximations, but I can say from experience that I have ended a cycle of the technique with more motes than I started with.
Purple Gear: Haven't paid as much attention because of bouncing around and dismantling my blues when they're ready, but they seem to consume between 50 and 100% more motes of light to level up.
IMPORTANT PURPLE GEAR FACT: Legendary Armor and Weapons only requires you to give it 50% of the total experience (or 3/6 bubbles filled for armor and half the bubbles for weapons) to net you the 5 marks and 3 motes of light.
If you dismantle all available gear as soon as it will net you 2 motes (or 5 marks/3 motes in the case of legendaries you dont want), you will be able to net back 100% of the motes of light you use in the process.
The key to this strategy is having a PLETHORA of BLUE HEAVY WEAPONS. They only take 5 motes of light to charge, and will return 2 motes to you. When you consider the fact that those 5 motes you used to charge the weapon also give you 5 mote charges to every other slot, you will hopefully see what I'm getting at.
LOL, you know it. I hated that battle before the Taken King. Such a crappy fight for rewards that were super underwhelming. So much easier now and has actually been done solo using the sword to block the essence. Plus I still need the Queenbreaker's Bow and Dreg's Promise.
We're going to try and set up a raid tomorrow night if you're down for that. Paul still hasn't beat it, so the plan if it works out is to try and get him through tomorrow night. Could work well for us if we can, as that'll allow us to go through it Thursday night or Friday night with Constant on our Titans.
Holding off for now, want to see what other things they roll out in the weeks to come. Also noticed that if you don't finish the previous week's bounties that the "complete 5 of Shaxx's weekly bounties rolls over." So I started with 2 bounties out of the 5 already completed for this week. Doubt it is supposed to do that so I expect a nerf but I'll reap the benefits this week.
Yeah the weapon parts and strange coins nerf is garbage.
I bought the Sorrow emote. Holding onto the other 200 silver though, for now.
I saw there was a Subclass Infusion consumable that was datamined. So it probably won't be too much longer until they add that to her list of wares; it full maxes the currently equipped subclass. Which would be useful for my Warlock, who has three things unlocked on Voidwalker and nothing on Sunsinger.
Also expect to see things like the consumable that was dataminded when patch 2.0 came out that allowed you to run Nightfall multiple times a week on the same character for rewards. Although, not sure why anyone would pay for it given how some of these nightfalls are kinda tedious and the rewards have been largely garbage.
Well nice to get that 2nd completion under our belt. Still have a few kinks to work out on my end. The run around part if I'm a floater I didn't know I could share a pillar, I honestly though that counted as overlapping. Would have saved some early headaches had I known. Losing sight of the boss during the teleport stage. Constantly was losing sight of him during that stage and caused me to miss my tether multiple times.
Didn't have the best luck from Raid drops, got the cloak at 300 and the chest piece at 300. Still need the helmet and the gauntlets. Still score a ton of blues though, close to 30 when all was said and done.
You get anything good from your legendary or exotic engrams?
I got a 309 Ghost, 309 gauntlets (but I have a 310 version, so I'll give it my warlock for infusion), a 306 cloak, a 302 machine gun (better than other one), and a 306 scout rifle. I still need raid boots, chest, and helmet. I've gotten the gloves three times.
The legendary engrams were all 270 something, so 9 marks. The exotic was a 290 alpha lupi, so a shard.
It took entirely too long (over four hours), but ultimately not bad considering it was the first time for half the team. I had doubts we'd complete it when Warpriest was giving us troubles, definitely thought it wouldn't happen when Golgoroth was taking too long (the first two sections everyone had done at least once before).
The Shade though. Definitely need to kill that faster, but there's not much you can do. I trouble seeing him too, and also missed a couple of tethers.
Touch of Malice is great when you're in the bubble to stagger Oryx, but I'd much prefer my Hung Jury during every other part of the Oryx encounter.
Looking forward to trying it later this week on my Titan, or maybe Warlock (I really want the chest piece for the Warlock, because the one I have now just looks like garbage, as most warlock chest pieces do).
Nightfall Rewards can be underwhelming. Runes/low # of coins/no reputation burst/weak legendaries all feel like losing. We're gonna fix it
Good. I also hope that applies to the Weekly Crucible bounties. I also hope they add some of the armor exotics that aren't in the game yet into that pool as it at least gives more reason to do Nightfall. At this point I really do Nightfall for the challenge
Speaking of Nightfalls, you want to knock it out on at least one character tonight?
I do have an arc weapon, that I had forgotten about because I put on my warlock to boost her light. It's a fusion rifle, and it's pretty awesome. Love the look and feel of it, and it hits like a truck. So I'll be rocking that and Thunderlord.
Got my Hunter up to rank 5 with the Gunsmith, and went ahead and knocked out the first part of the First Curse quest. Also got my Warlock up to rank 2, so I've got that fusion rifle now too.
Need to put a little more time into my warlock and complete some quests. Was thinking about using her to raid, but I haven't even gotten the Summoner's Circle/Road to King's Fall quest on her yet, so that'll cause me to hold off doing the raid with her.
Should be around tonight, if so I'll definitely be down for the Nightfall.
Apparently there is an infinite arrow glitch with Hunters and quiver. You start the super, shoot an arrow or two, and then go into your menu before the super meter runs out. When you come out your super will be back to being completely full. Sucks for PvP as I'm sure we'll see a lot of that popping up.
