So I'm strongly considering getting a Switch finally, mainly because I miss Nintendo games.
I've owned every Nintendo system except for GameCub and Switch. Switch I didn't get because of how poorly supported the Wii U was.I enjoyed the Wii a ton and purchased the Wii U day one, so was a little ticked off at how poor it ended up being.
The thing is though, Switch came out in 2017. So it's very likely that a follow up launches next year sometime, probably around the holidays. So about a year and a half.
I would buy one with no qualms if Nintendo would just say whether or not the Switch 2 or whatever they're next system is will play Switch games. I'm not keen on building up a library of games if they're not going to be playable on the next system.

www.tomsguide.com/news/nintendo-switch-2 ^^ There isn't much to hang our hats on here and take note of the back and forth about compatibility. Nintendo has lost much of my confidence and trust over the years with their decision making on the hardware front. It's like "fool me once, fool me twice" and I think they have gone past that. They still make good games although I think they enjoy some nostalgic overhype benefit. How badly do you want to play x number of games? It's hard to believe the Switch is 6 years old. If Nintendo is really serious about a Switch 2 in time for the holiday season this year the hype train needs to start NOW. We need to see intel past this phase.

Definitely no Switch 2 this year. They've already confirmed no new hardware through April of 2024.
I went ahead and bought it. Realistically, probably not going to jump on a follow up day one anyway. Even if it isn't backwards compatible, there's plenty of games I'd like to play or play on the Switch that I already have.
Mario Odyssey (which I'm getting free with the system) New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Animal Crossing Switch Sports Xenoblade Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Games like Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life and also Pioneers of Olive Town are both games I'd actually prefer to play on Switch over PS5 just because they're perfect for a portable system. Dragon's Dogma another game that I already own on PS3 and PS4, but would buy again to be able to play wherever.
If the next one is backwards compatible, great, but if not I still think I'd get more enjoyment out of it now than I have the Xbox Series S over the year I've had it. Mainly because the Microsoft exclusives haven't been that good, and the multiplatform games I'd definitely rather play on PlayStation. At least I know Nintendo's first party games are going to be excellent. Plus the rumor is Nintendo will be releasing a brand new 2D Mario platformer this year, and I will always be a sucker for them.
